Sioux City (map) is a city on the western part of Iowa. Covering 56 sq mi (144.9 sq km), it has a population of 83,000 (2011 estimate). This makes it the fourth most populous city in Iowa. The city is within Woodbury and Plymouth counties. It observes the Central Standard Time (UTC-6) and in summer the Central Daylight Time (UTC-5).

Sioux City is at the navigational head of the Missouri River. The region surrounding it, including neighbouring northeastern Nebraska and southeastern South Dakota, is collectively called Siouxland. It experiences a humid continental climate. Hottest month is July, with average high temperature of 86.2°F (30.11°C) while the coldest month is January, with average low of 8.5°F (-13.06°C). May is the wettest month with 3.75 in (95.3 mm) of precipitation.

The area around Sioux City was inhabited by various Native American tribes when the first European arrived there. Spanish and French fur traders were the first white men to reach the area. The Louis & Clark expedition camped near the Sioux City area when they were exploring the area in 1804. One of the earliest settlements in the area was established by William Thompson near Floyd's Bluff in 1848. Other settlers move in to settle further upriver, between the Floyd and Big Sioux rivers.
Sioux City was founded in 1854 by Dr John K. Cook, who began to draw out the plan for the city. It started out as a town, and was incorporated as a city in 1857. The first railroad reached Sioux City in 1868. This enable the further development of the town, bringing in a number of industries including a big meatpacking factory.
Popcorn is said to have first been introduced in Sioux City in 1914. It soon became popular throughout American and the rest ofthe world.
As Sioux City enters the 21st century, its downtown area underwent another round of urban renewal. A number of its historic buildings were restored, among them The Orpheum Theatre, while new buildings and facilities replaced older ones.
