South Ferry (see map) is a public building at the southern tip of Manhattan. It serves as the embarkation point for ferries to Staten Island (Staten Island Ferry) and Governors Island.

Nearest subway station include the South Ferry Subway Station, Whitehall Street Subway Station and Bowling Green Subway Station. The South Ferry building used to serve as the terminal for the elevated train lines that run up Second, Third, Sixth and Ninth Avenues. These lines are however no longer in operation since the service was terminated in 1955.

The South Ferry Building, long thought even by the locals to denote its location as the ferry terminal on the southern tip of Manhattan, was actually named after a ferry known as South Ferry. It was one of the ferry boats that carried passengers between the then New York City (now Manhattan) and Brooklyn.
