Springfield is a city in Western Massachusetts. It is the biggest city along the Connecticut River, and the county seat of Hampden County. Springfield is also the third biggest city in Massachusetts and the fourth biggest in New England, behind Boston, Worcester and Providence.

Springfield has a population of 154,000 (2011 estimate) and a metropolitan area population of 700,000. It is just 25 miles to the north of Hartford, Connecticut, which is also on the Connecticut River, and are both served by the Bradley International Airport, located midway between them.

As with many of the cities in New England, Springfield is a very old city, having been settled in 1636 and incorporated as a city in 1852. It covers 33.2 sq mi (86 sq km) and observes the Eastern Standard Time Zone, which is five hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-5) and four hours behind in summer (UTC-4).
Springfield experiences a humid continental climate. Its winters are cold with often heavy snowfall. Its summers are warm and humid, with the occasional thunderstorm, although tornadoes are rare.
Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield

Springfield is celebrated as the birthplace of basketball, hence is it home to the Basketball Hall of Fame. The childhood home of Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr Seuss, is also in Springfield. Springfield's Forest Park is one of the largest urban parks in the United States, covering some 735 acres. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the famous landscape designer who also designed New York's Central Park. The area between Springfield and Hartford is called the Knowledge Corridor, for it is home to 29 colleges and universities, providing education to 100,000 university students.

Interstate 90 passes through Springfield from east to west while Interstate 91 passes through it from north to south. Alternatively you can fly to Bradley International Airport (BDL) and take a cab from there.
