St Louis is the second-biggest city in Missouri. Covering 66.2 sq mi (171.3 sq km), it is located on bluffs over the western banks of the Mississippi River. The city has a population of 320,000 (2011 estimate) within the Greater St Louis urban area which has 2.9 million inhabitants, the fourth largest urban area in the Midwest.

St Louis is in the transition zone between the humid continental climate and the humid subtropical climate. The warmest month here is July, when average temperature rises to 89.8°F (32.11°C) while the coldest is January, when it goes down to 21.2°F (-6°C). May is the wettest month in St Louis.
St Louis is perhaps best known for its iconic Gateway Arch. Although designed in 1943, it was only completed in 1965, and stands today as the tallest manmade monument in the United States.

The first European to arrive in the St Louis area were French explorers Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette in 1673. Five years later, the site was claimed by René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de la Salle, for France, and named the entire valley Louisiana, after King Louis XIV.
The settlement of St Louis was given a boost following the 1763 Treaty of Paris, which gave the land east of the Mississippi to Britain, compelling French settlers on the east side of the river to relocated to the west side. In 1803, St Louis became part of the United States under the Louisiana Purchase. It is henceforth recognized as the Gateway City to the West. The city of St Louis was incorporated on 9 December, 1822.

Four Interstate highways converge on St Louis. The I-70 passes through the norther npart of St Louis, connecting it with Kansas City to the west and Indianapolis to the east. The I-55 passes from the north to south, connecting it with Chicago to the north and Memphis to the south. I-44 approaches it from Tulsa to the southwest while I-64 aspproaches from Louisville in the east.
The Lambert-St Louis International Airport (STL) serving St Louis is the biggest airport in Missouri. The two main airlines serving this airport are Southwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines. There is a train service connecting the airport to downtown St Louis.
