St Thomas Church is an Episcopal parish church of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. It is located at the corner of 53rd Street and Fifth Avenue, in the Upper Midtown neighborhood of Manhattan. The carvings inside it were the work of sculptor Lee Lawrie.

The present St Thomas Church is the fourth building of this parish and the second one on the same site. The present structure was erected between 1909 and 1914 to replace the one which burned down in 1905. The previous building was the setting for many glittering high-society weddings, the most lavish of which was the wedding of heiress Consuelo Vanderbilt to the English Duke of Marlborough.

The present St Thomas Church building is of limestone. It was built in the French-Gothic style, with a single asymmetrical church tower and an off-center nave. These are the architectural solutions to fit the church into the awkward corner position over which it was constructed.

Inside the St Thomas Church are richly carved shimmering white screens located behind the alter. They were the work of Bertram Goodhue and sculptor Lee Lawrie. The carvings in the choir stalls date to the 1920's. The carvings depict modern inventions such as the telephone, and the likeness of Presidents Roosevelt, Wilson and sculptor Lee Lawrie himself.

How to reach the St Thomas Church
