As early as the late 19th century Stamford had already become a bedroom community for people working in Manhattan, and commuting by train to work. Its city center underwent a massive redevelopment in the 1970's as several New York City corporations relocated to Stamford, resulting in a building boom that added a number of skyscrapers to the skyline.
