Staten Island Ferry is a ferry service between Manhattan and Staten Island. The ferry runs between the Whitehall Terminal at the southernmost part of Manhattan, and St George Ferry Terminal on Staten Island. The service is provided 24 hours a day, around the year. Each journey takes 25 minutes each way. The Staten Island Ferry service has been operating since 1810. The first ferry service was started by a young man named Cornelius Vanderbilt, who grew up to become a railroad magnate.

The 5-mile journey provides unsurpassable views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and Lower Manhattan's skyline. Incredibly, the service is free. Cyclists are allowed to bring their bicycles on board, to the lowest deck of the ferry without charge. Cars were once allowed on board, at $3 per vehicle, but this was discontinued after the September 11 attacks.

How to reach the Staten Island Ferry

Take the R or W trains to the Whitehall Street-South Ferry station, or the 1 train to the South Ferry Station. The Staten Island Ferry runs 24 hours a day, and as mentioned, it is free.
