More on Tallahasse FL

Tallahassee is home to a number of prominent colleges and universities, among them the Florida State University and Florida A&M University. As well as being the state capital, it is also the regional trade center for the Florida Panhandle region.

The name Tallahassee comes from a Muskogean Native American word meaning "old fields." Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto is said to be the first European to arrive in the area, arriving there in 1538.

The city of Tallahassee was created to be the capital of Florida. The choice was due to its located between St Augustine and Pensacola, then the capitals of East Florida and West Florida. It was the main city for slave trading, due to its position as the capital of the Cotton Belt. Until the end of the Civil War, which ended slavery, the Tallahassee area was the economic center of Florida. This has since shifted to the southern part of the Florida peninsula.
