More on Tempe AZ
The city of Tempe was named after the Vale of Tempe, of Greek mythology (which in modern times refer to the gorge in northern Thessaly in Greece). Today it is best known as the location of the corporate headquarters of US Airways Group. The Tempe campus of the Arizona State University is also its oldest.
The name of the city was suggested by pioneer Darrell Duppa in 1879. A few years later, the Arizona Territorial Legislature selected it as the site of the Territorial Normal School, the precursor of the Arizona State University. Today the city is regarded as a center of education and commerce within the suburb of Phoenix.
