Thornton is a city within Adams County and Weld County in central northern Colorado. It is just 10 miles (16 km) to the northeast of Denver. The city covers 27.2 sq mi (70.4 sq km) and has a population of 120,000 (2011 estimate). It is the sixth most populous city in the state.

Thornton is located at an average elevation of 5,351 ft (1,631 m). It observes the Mountain Standard Time, which is seven hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-7), and six hours behind during Daylight Saving Time in summer. The phone area codes for Thornton are 303 and 720.

Thornton has quite a recent history. It was farmland till as recently as 1953, when the area was developed by Sam Hoffman. The city was named after one of the past governors of Colorado, Dan Thornton.

Thornton is served by the I-25 and I-76, along with Colorado State Highways 7, 44, and 224, and the E-470 tollway. From Denver, you can take the I-25 heading north, and leave the highway at Exit 220 to Thornton Parkway.
