Three Forks is a small city in Gallatin County in southern Montana. The city covers just 1.3 sq mi (3.4 sq km) and has a population of 2,000 people (2011 estimate). It got its name for the convergence of the Jefferson, Madison and Gallatin rivers to form the Missouri River. The city itself is within the drainage basins of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers.

The three rivers that converge to form the Missouri were named by Meriwether Lewis in 1805 for President Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State James Madison and Treasury Secretary Albert Gallatin, about when the area was visited by the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
