The Titanic Memorial, also called the South Street Lighthouse, is a monument in the Seaport neighborhood of Lower Manhattan, New York City in rememberance of those who perished in the sinking of the RMS Titanic on 15 April, 1912. It is in the form of a 60-foot-tall lighthouse.
The memorial was put up at the instigation of the famous New York socialite Margaret Brown, popularly known as The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Brown herself helped others board lifeboats and even set six to go back and collect more survivors.
The Titanic Memorial had been moved a few times before "settling" at its present located, at the entrance to the South Street Seaport, at a corner between Fulton and Pearl Streets.
The Titanic Memorial is by no means the only memorial related to the Titanic in New York City, for across town, in Morningside, there is a park called Straus Park, which was built to remember Ida and Isidor Straus. Straus was a US congressman and co-owner of Macy's who died in the Titanic sinking.
How to reach the Titanic Memorial
Take the 2 or 3 subway trains to the Fulton Street subway station, and then walk south down Fulton Street until you reach the memorial.Return to Lower Manhattan
