Trenton is the capital of New Jersey and county seat of Mercer County. It covers 8.15 sq mi (21.1 sq km) and has a population of 85,000 people (2011 estimate). It is located on the eastern bank of the Delaware River across from Pennsylvania.

Trenton was first mentioned as a township in 1719, when a constable was appointed there. The following year, its courthouse and jail were established. The town was named after William Trent, a prominent merchant in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. During the American Revolutionary War, it was the site of George Washington's first military victory. After the war, it served briefly as the national capital of the United States in November and December of 1784. Trenton was made the capital of New Jersey in 1790 and was granted city status in 1792.Trenton experiences a humid continental climate. July is the hottest month here, when average high temperature rises to 85°F (29°C). It is also the wettest month, with 4.8 in (122 mm) of rain. Coldest month is January, with average low temperature of 24°F (-4°C).
Today African Americans form 54% of the population of Trenton. The city was a major manufacturing center in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but suffered economic declines particularly in the 1960s and 70s.
