The history of Trinity Church goes back to 1696, when Governor Benjamin Fletcher approved the purchase of land in Lower Manhattan by the Church of England. The annual rental for the land was sixty bushels of wheat. The first Trinity Church building was erected in 1698. In 1705, the land holdings of the church was increased by Queen Anne to 215 acres. Trinity School and Charity School were founded on the land in 1709, followed by King's College - the precursor of today's Columbia University - in 1754.

The original Trinity Church building was razed by the Great New York City Fire of 1776. This led to the contruction of the second Trinity Church in 1788. The building was consecrated in 1790. It last until 1839, when it was severely weakened by heavy snow.

The present Trinity Church building is the third to be erected. It was completed in 1846, and had a 281-foot (86 m) spire, which made it the tallest building in New York City for close to half a century, until it was surpassed in 1890 by the New York World Building. The building was designed by architect Richard Upjohn in the Gothic Revival style. The Trinity Church was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976 for its significance, both architecturally as well as for its position in the history of New York City.
