The role of Virginia Beach as a resort area was ignited in the late 19th century, after the railroad was laid and electricity introduced. This led to the opening of the original Princess Anne Hotel around 1891.

The city of Virginia Beach was incorporated in 1906. At that time, it was entirely dependent on the railroad for bringing in guests. A proper road was only built in 1922, with the completion of the Virginia Beach Boulevard. It opened the way for more visitors to come, in cars, buses and trucks, and it proved so popular that the train service was eventually discontinued.

Today Virginia Beach is a major resort city on the East Coast. It has miles of beaches lined with tourist accommodation and restaurants - in fact, it is in the Guinness Book of Records for having the longest recreational beach in the world.
