Washington has a population of 6.6 million people. It is the 13th most populous state in the country. The largest city is Seattle while the capital is Olympia.

Washington state was known as Washington Territory until it attained statehood on 11 November, 1889. It was the 42nd state to gain admission. It is located in the Pacific time zone (-8/-7 GMT). The abbreviation for Washington is WA.

Budget Travel to and around Washington

By Plane
The main airport serving Washington State is the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), which receives many flights from San Francisco and Southern California. Other airports that you can fly to include Spokane International Airport (GEG), Portland International Airport (PDX) and Vancouver International Airport (YVR) across the border in Canada.

By Train
There are two train services by Amtrak to Washington State. They are the Amtrak Cascades and Coast Starlight. Both runs along the West Coast from Vancouver, Canada to Los Angeles. Another train service, the Empire Builder, runs from Spokane through northern Montana to St. Paul, Milwaukeee and ends in Chicago.

By Road
Interstate highway 5 connects Seattle in Washington with Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Canada. I-90 crosses the state from east to west, connecting Seattle with Spokane, while I-82 serves the southern part of Washington State.
