More on West Valley City

West Valley City is the result of the urban sprawl of Salt Lake City. It previously comprised various suburbs such as Granger, Hunter, Chesterfield and Redroom, and was incorporated as West Valley City in 1980. It is still very much a bedroom community for residents commuting daily to work in Salt Lake City.

Granger was one of the earlier settlements of West Valley City. It was settled by Mormon led by Dan Jones in 1849. They built irrigation systems, but are sometimes defeated by the high alkali content of the local water supply. The settlement of Hunter dates back to 1876. When irrigation system was put in place in 1881, the site became a farming community with mainly fruit orchards.

The various communities in West Valley City were predominantly agricultural until the 1970s, when they developed and urbanized. The city was given a further boost when it hosted the men's and women's ice hockey competitions for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
