More on Wheeling

The history of European settlement in Wheeling goes back to 1769, when Ebenezer Zane claimed the land. He returned with his wife and brothers to establish a settlement there the following year. In the beginning the settlement was known as Zanesburg. It was established in 1795, incorporated as a town in 1805, and as a city in 1836.

Following the secession of the western counties of Virginia in 1861, Wheeling was one of the cities that served as the capital of West Virginia, in a period that the state capital was nicknamed the floating capital, as it was so frequently relocated. It last served as state capital until 1885, when the capital was moved permanently to Charleston.

Visiting Wheeling

Interstate 70 connects Wheeling with the rest of the country (although to reach the rest of West Virginia, you most likely have to take US Highway 250 and head south). Near the city, the I-70 splits into two, with the southern arm called the I-470.
