The history of Wichita goes back to 1870. The area was originally populated by the Wichita Indians, and was visited by European traders. In the late 1920's the city became the choice site for pioneer aircraft manufacturers to set up their plants. Among the aircraft corporations to be based in Wichita include Cessna, Stearman, Moony and Beech. Their presence earned the city the nickname "Air Capital of the World".
Wichita experiences a humid continental climate. Hottest month of the year is July, when average temperature may rise to 93°F (34°C). On the other hand, January temperature may drop to 20°F (-7°C). The wettest months are May and June.
