More on Williamsport

The history of Williamsport goes back to the late 18th century, when colonists began to occupy land inhabited by Native Americans, resulting in a clash known as the Battle of Muncy Hills (1763).

Lycoming County was created in 1795 and eleven years later Williamsport was incorporated as a borough. It thrived on its lumber industry, and at one time, is said to have more millionaires per capita than anywhere else in the world. This is reflected in the fine houses in the Millionaire's Row Historic District.

Williamsport was given city status in 1866. The first Little League Baseball game was played here in 1939. Today the city produces the Lycoming aircraft engines as well as consumer products such as vacuum cleaners.
