Winston-Salem is the fourth largest city in North Carolina. It is also the county seat and largest city in Forsyth County. The city covers 132.4 sq mi (176.6 sq km) and has a population of 230,000 people (2011 estimate).

Winston-Salem is located in the northwest piedmont area of North Carolina. It comprises two towns which merged in 1913. The town of Salem was established in 1753 while the town of Winston in 1849. Both towns were closely related to the tobacco industry.

The chief player in the industry is the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, established by Richard Joshua Reynolds in 1874. The company created Camel cigarettes in 1913 and brought out other popular cigarette brands including Salem and Winston.

Winston-Salem is served by Interstate 40 which runs east-west, connecting it with Greensboro. Also passing through the Winston-Salem area is Interstate 40 and US Highway 53.
