More on Worcester MA

The Worcester area was first settled in 1673. It was originally called Quinsigamond. Due to repeated attacks by native tribes, the settlement was abandoned twice, the first time in 1675 and the second in 1702. The present city of Worcester dates back to its third incarnation in 1713, when it was established by Douglas Worcester (1673-1753), who hailed from the city of Worcester, England. It was incorporated as a town in 1722 and chartered as a city in 1848.

Today, Worcester covers 38.6 sq mi (99.9 sq km). Blackstone River passes through the city, although some parts of it is now covered when it goes through the city center. The city has over 1,200 acres of public parks, including Elm Park, one of the first public parks in the United States. It was designed by Frederick Law Olm, the American landscape designer whose parks include Central Park and Prospect Park in New York City, and Forest Park in Springfield.
