 Worth Monument, New York City
Worth Monument is a monument at Worth Square, a traffic island at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Broadway in Manhattan, New York City. It is in the form of a 5-tier obelisk standing on a podium. Worth Square is a triangular piece of land bordered by Fifth Avenue to the east, Broadway to the west, and West 25th Street to the north. It is across the road from Madison Square Park.
The monument commemorates General William J. Worth, the only public figure to be buried under the streets of Manhattan. General Worth (1794-1849) was a hero in the Mexican-American War. Apart from the monument, General Worth was also immortalized in the name of Worth Street in Manhattan and Fort Worth in Texas.
How to reach the Worth Monument
Take the R or W train to the 23rd Street / Broadway subway station. Walk north along Broadway until you see Worth Square right in front of you.
