Yale University is the third-oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. It is located in New Haven, Connecticut. The university was founded in 1701, and is today a prestigious Ivy League school.

Yale University was originally incorporated as the Collegiate School. In 1718 it was renamed Yale College after Elihu Yale, the governor of the British East India Company. In 1861 its Graduate School of Arts and Science became the first school in the United States to award the Ph.D.

Yale was a founding member of the Association of American Universities. From the 1930's onwards it was transformed through the establishment of residential colleges, of which there are a total of 12 today, with two more being planned. The university employs a 1,100 faculty. It has 5,300 undergraduate and 6,100 graduate and professional students.
